Mauna Loa From The Slopes Of Mauna Kea
Went to top of Mauna Kea for sunrise but there was a storm so I headed back down to lower slopes. I waited for about a hour and got a brief period between the passing storm clouds and took this shot overlooking Mauna Loa.
Mauna Kea Sunrise - Hawaii
The atmosphere above Mauna Kea is extremely dry as it is above the inversion layer that separates the lower air from the upper atmospheric air. This keeps most cloud cover below the summit and allows the air on the summit to be dry. The prevailing trade winds push most of the moisture towards the South-East, to the city of Hilo, giving a spectacular view of thick clouds from the summit.
Mauna Loa Under The Stars
